Cinnamomum camphora is an aromatic evergreen tree with a rounded, dense crown. The leaves are partly opposite, elliptical and pointed. The bark is gray, rough and furrowed. This tree flowers in the spring revealing long yellow clusters. It is usually found in humid areas near roadsides and waste places. In the deep south, it is a popular street tree as it provides excellent shade. In Asia, camphor oil and gum, obtained from steam distillation of leaf clippings and wood, is used as medicine. The insect-repellent wood of this tree is used to make various cabinetry and chests.
